This year at the annual Burning Man festival, BWB will be bringing a project never before seen in Black Rock City. We are looking for musicians, instruments, composers, and artists to participate in The Music Box Project.

Cultural First Responders: The Music Box Project

Burners Without Borders is inventing something new on the Playa this year.
We are using our music stage to create a prototype music facility that we can drop into disaster zones very soon after the earthquake, hurricane or tornado.  It will arrive in crates and contain modules for stage performance, session recording and composition.

We will put out word to musicians in the stricken area that they can make music again wherever we set up.  Putting musicians promptly back in business will bring several important new gifts to disaster zones:

1.    Making music is how musicians process and heal.
2.    Communities can come together around music.
3.    Friday night music will give volunteers and survivors needed relief from a week’s horror.
4.    Composers and writers will start an oral history of crisis and resilience.
5.    Satellite connectivity can permit distribution of new music on a daily basis to radio stations to raise awareness and funds.
6.    That same link can allow distant radio stations and groups to post files to encourage and entertain people in the Zone.
7.    A new body of “folk music” can emerge in genres like Electronic and DJ Mixes.

While other groups lead the way in re-building physical towns, we can help re-build communities with local music and far flung resources.  We can use art to connect communities that suddenly need each other, and need to remember each other.
Burners Without Borders will be keeping our stage alive with music during the day, and conducting a live, virtual “disaster drill” to create new music and put it on off-playa radio to prove the concept from beginning to end.

We are looking for musicians, instruments, a little technology, composers, and artists to participate.

We are also in need of LAPTOPS to make this project a success. Please e-mail carmen@burnerswithoutborders.org if you can donate. Thanks!

We will also be making instruments from objects you might find in an earthquake zone—to inspire impromptu jams by the best musicians on the Playa.
We have sound donated by Catalyst Chicago.  We are looking for musicians, composers, some hardware, and everyone who likes the mission of BwB.
Art is important in life, and that includes disaster zones.  We are pioneering new uses of art and inviting the artists of Burning Man to touch a great idea on their terms.  Please join us.

Join us for this project and so much more during Burning Man at

 3:30 and Esplanade.
