The space, which we’re calling the KOIpound (KY, OH, IN), consists of two floors equaling 3000 sq ft, a gated courtyard of 3500 sq ft, including a roofed outside storage area of 1500 sq ft, we have more than enough space to create and grow. The pound is located within the historical district of an economically depressed area of Cincinnati, OH, with schools (elementary to college) located nearby. We knew the building and its location would offer us a chance to share our vision, our art, and our way of life with the wider community.
The KOIburners community follows the 10 principles and hopes to share those with the greater community thru neighborhood clean-ups, offering workshops on various topics, or creating a safe space to be oneself.
One of the biggest and best methods we have found to do this is through our Workshop Weekends. Workshops open to the community & also providing technical assistance for community. Once held in a local member’s home, we plan to make this the anchor event at the pound. We’ve had workshops in the past on simple carpentry, hoop making, herbal tinctures and teas, LED circuitry and programming and more. We’re looking forward to holding workshops on glass fusing, welding, car maintenance, textile dyeing, and staple food canning. As our membership grows, our skill sets grow, and the scope of the workshops expands.
We currently have a full shop with various saws, lathes, drills, power hand tools, welders, and pneumatic tools, as well as members who know how to use them and wish to share this knowledge. The space features a WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil) facility that’s been in use elsewhere for a few years. There are various supplies for use at the KOIpound as well, everything from lumber to spray paint to ceiling tiles and even an airplane fuselage. We have repurposing engineers who are, humbly, second to none.
In addition to a full and hopefully growing shop, the pound also has 1700 square feet of rehearsal/performance space, meeting space, indoor and outdoor storage space and large areas to work on large-scale art projects.
