Petaluma Phoenix Center

BWB partnership with the Petaluma Phoenix Center will bond art with low income food distribution.  The $250 of community money will be used for the creation of a 12'x24' mural to advertise the bounty farm to the general public.

The Petaluma Phoenix Center, www.petalumaphoenix.org, is a 501 (c) 3 teen center which is home to a youth run arts committee and several free after school arts and music programs for teens. In 2008 we began an initiative to partner with local organizations to provide public facing works and “real life” arts experience to our youth out in the community. While the projects themselves differ in scope, they contain common components; they are led by youth working in partnership with professional artists, they engage with the community and provide real life experience to young artists in how to create and promote art in the public.

We were approached by Petaluma Bounty, http://www.petalumabounty.org/, a nonprofit which runs an urban farm and several programs to provide healthy fresh produce to low income families in our community, to create a billboard which would provide more visibility to their farm in town. While the farm is centrally located and visible from a main street through town, it is easily missed by passersby. This project is a collaborative effort between the members of our art committee and students from our Art to Empire class, to create a 12’x24’ mural/sign to advertise the bounty farm to the general public.
